Sun and Surf from Luxury Resorts to Backpacker Crash Pads

The dryer Guanacaste coast is for sun lovers and contains the majority of large chain properties. But the smaller towns have a lot of charm and as you go further south onto the Nicoya Peninsula the vibe becomes more casual and the climate gets more tropical.

Samara / Nosara and Tamarindo are some of the principal towns of interest to LGBT travelers. Further south the towns of Mal Pais, Montezuma and Santa Teresa have a fun backpacker and surfer style.

If you need transport from San Jose or Liberia to the Guanacaste Coast or Nicoya Penisula towns, there are regular buses and shuttles as well as turboprop flights to Tamarindo, Nosara, Punta Islita and Tambor. You can see all the transport options between any two points in Costa Rica on our transport planner.
