LGBT Tourism in Costa Rica

Traveling in Costa Rica for Gay and Lesbian visitors.

Costa Rica is THE up & coming LGBT destination!

When many LGBT people think of a holiday in Latin America, most think Puerta Vallarta or Brazil. These are great dynamic locations for the LGBT traveler and the masses. However, there are many that want a more adventurous, organic experience with Latin Countries and Culture and many feel that Costa Rica provides just what they are looking for.

For well over a decade, Costa Rica has been the most popular destination in Central America for LGBT travellers. 15 years ago, LGBT travel was limited to San Jose and Manuel Antonio. Now there are a big variety of locations that offer LGBT owned and/or friendly accommodations and services all over the country. From the warm sands of the Pacific, to the tropical Caribbean, LGBT travelers can now plan full 7 to 14 day multi-destination itineraries and have a choice of accommodation that welcomes you and allows you to take in all this diverse small country has to offer.

Ernesto and his team at Caribe Fun Tours have been planning and booking Costa Rica Vacations for LGBT Traveling Community for 6 years. They also have a satellite provider in the capital San Jose with plans to open in other exciting destinations in key locations in Costa Rica! It has always been my overall experience over the many years, that Costa Ricans have always been warm and friendly people. As a open gay man living in Costa Rica for over a decade, I have never felt threatened or dismissed as a person.

I do feel Costa Rica is a great place to visit, not just for gay clients, but everyone. This small diverse country offers sandy beaches, exotic wildlife, multiculturalism, unspoiled tropical jungles, steaming volcano’s and San Jose, a capital city full of displays of Latin culture with a unique gay night life that makes it easy to meet and party with local Costa Ricans.

It has been my experience, that LGBT travelers in Costa Rica, are almost planning their return before they even leave.

Progressive society

Now just a week after the newly elected government, The new President surprised the country by announcing sweeping changes that would recognize lesbian and gay couples in matters of medical coverage and some other partner recognitions. Even more publicly, on May 16, 2014 Costa Rica Government hoisted the traditional rainbow flag at the presidential palace in a public display of solidarity with the LGBT communities. The rainbow flag was raised right alongside the Costa Rican Flag in front of The Presidential House to mark the International Day Against Homo/Transphobia.

Yes, they still have a ways to go to catch up with many other more developed countries, but this first step was a big one and was very symbolic for a new government in a Catholic country in Central America.
